For our Art day in Year 6, we had the theme of botanical watercolour illustrations. We found out about the history and importance of botanical illustrations and looked at a range of artists and their work across the centuries. These included, Pierre-Joseph Redouté (Marie Antoinette’s court appointed garden painter), Albrecht Dürer and others.
We spent the morning honing our skills, looking at blending, tone and depth of colour as well as techniques to help draw the plants and flowers accurately, including from different perspectives. It was not as easy as we expected.
The afternoon was the time to put our skills into practice. We were given a range of flowers to choose from and water colour paints and pencils. With a lot of concentration and effort our illustrations took form. We were extremely pleased with how we worked and the skills we used. Everyone was proud of their art work.
We had a fantastic day and learnt a lot. We couldn’t believe the range of art work produced throughout the school, when we went on a tour of the classrooms. It all looked very impressive. We can’t wait until the next art day.
